Give This Fun Fold a Try with the Cut & Tuck Method While Using Celebrate Sunflowers Stamp Set and Dies for a Friend's Birthday Card

Every now and then, something new in the card making world surprises me, and this card layout was it!

My team member Anne shared this interesting "Fun Fold" with me that she received at a shoebox swap that she participated in. I have never seen this method in my almost 12 years as a Demonstrator. 

This Cut and Tuck Method is very interesting, but not hard to make at all. I used mostly retired products but the two current stamp sets I used were Go To Greetings and Celebrate Sunflowers. You can use whatever you have on hand. You should definitely give this Cut & Tuck card a try.

The cardbase is 4-1/4" x 11", scored at 5-1/2"

The front and inside piece of Designer Series Paper measures 2-1/8" x 4-1/4".

The Basic White inner liner measures 3-1/8" x 4"

In the diagram below you have the card base open facing you as you would be looking at the inside of the card.

The secret to this method is to measure in 2-1/8" in both directions from the top card edge and the middle of the side edge. With a pencil and ruler, draw the line you will cut with your paper snips. I found you will need to widen the cut just a smidge to allow for the thickness of the cardstock to slide into the angled cut easily and lie flat.

How you close the card is to lift the back angle of the card and bring it over the front angled tip and slide it down into place. It "locks" into place if done correctly.

I love experimenting with Basic Black, Basic White and Real Red color combinations.

This card below I actually made first, but realized that the two pieces of Designer Series Paper (DSP) need to be the same width so the angled cut ends at the same spot on both the front and back of the card base. You can't see my mistake because the Sunflower image covers it up.

When I was looking at the He's the Man Suite, I saw this "Cheers for all your Years" die cut and said to myself, my son would love this card! Since he loves his beer!

Three Shades of Gray Guys Birthday Card

Have you ever tried to do repeated stamping? Of course, it is easy when you use the Stamparatus precision stamping plate. However, I couldn't use it since I wanted the triple "Happy" so close together. Thanks to the grid paper in the Well Suited Designer Series Paper it was easy to create this Masculine Birthday card using the technique of Repeated Stamping.

My customers created this card at my February Stamp and Chat classes. A couple of the gals decided to put the birthday vertically next to the triple happy and that looked nice too!

This card was inspired by Akiko Sudano.

Products Used to Create this Card:

Smoky Slate cardstock card base cut 5-1/2" x 8-1/2", scored at 4-1/4"

Well Suited Designer Series Paper - 3 different designs:

Grid Paper cut 3" x 4-1/4"

Dotted Gray cut 1" x 4"

Vertical Gray stripe cut 1" x 5-1/4"

Biggest Wish stamp set

Three Inks used - Smoky Slate, Gray Granite, Memento Tuxedo Black

Products needed to make these Cards:

Basic White Thick cardstock cut 5-1/2" x 8-1/2", scored at 4-1/4"

Basic White cardstock strip cut 1/2" x 4"

From the Peaceful Print Designer Series Paper (DSP) - cut a row of deer at a height of 2-1/8", then square up the deer as shown in the photo. 

Using the Christmas to Remember stamp set and Memento Tuxedo Black Ink, stamp the greeting. (HINT- I cut the stamp in two so each word was separate.)

Mount the deer on a 2-3/8" square of Basic Black cardstock

From your choice of the DSP cut two 4" x 5-1/4" vertical pieces

Slice those pieces horizontally at 3-1/4"

Mix and match the pieces to look similar to the photo. Adhere to the card base. Add the Basic White 1/2" strip to hide the seam. Then raise the deer up on dimensionals. Add red rhinestones for embellishment and a small black and white gingham bow with glue dots. Wasn't that fast?

Six Easy Designer Series Paper Cards to Make

Not too long ago I stumbled across this idea online from Alison Okamitsu of nicepeoplestamp.com and I knew I wanted to give it a try. I bet you will too! It's so easy and a great way to use up full 4" x 12" strips of Designer Series Paper from your collection. (I have a collection, don't you too?)

For my set of 6 cards I am using Hydrangea Hill Designer Series Paper (DSP) from the Hydrangea Hill Suite in the January-June 2021 Mini Catalog. My greeting stamps were from a variety of stamp sets. The little hydrangea flower is from the Hydrangea Haven stamp set and stamped with Highland Heather ink.

Let's Get Started!

Step 1: Select 3 pieces of coordinating DSP that you like. Cut a 4" x 12" piece from each sheet, for a total of three strips.

Step 2: Using the Cutting  Diagram below, you will cut each strip into two - 4" x 5-1/4" pieces and two 4" x 3/4" pieces.

The photo below shows an easy way to organize your cut pieces, so you know you haven't made any cutting mistakes. Do pay attention to the directionality of the DSP.

Step 3: You will cut each 4" x 5-1/4" piece precisely in half at 4" x 2-5/8".

Flip over the bottom piece from each larger piece so you can see both sides of your DSP.

Step 4: Then have fun starting to mix and match the lower pieces with the upper pieces until you have 6 different card fronts. Then take the 3/4" x 4" strips and experiment with them to see which side of the DSP looks best with your card front pieces.

Step 5: Once you have the card fronts the way you like them, it's now time to select the matching cardstock and quantities to cut your card bases. I chose one sheet of each cardstock of Old Olive, Seaside Spray, and Gorgeous Grape. Cut the bases 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" then score at 4-1/4".

Step 6: Adhere your DSP pieces to your card fronts. Make sure you have a 1/8" margin on the top and bottom and sides. If the DSP has to overlap a bit in the middle that's okay. Also you can decide if you want your 3/4" strip smack dab in the middle or you can adjust it up or down on how you want it to look.

At this point, you can also cut your inner card layer. I used Basic White and cut 6 pieces at 4" x 5-1/4". Then adhere those to the inside of each card.

Step 7: Finally select a circle punch or circle die that is at least 2" in diameter (it can be larger if you desire.) Punch/Cut six circles out of Basic White. Next go through your collection of stamp greetings and select some to fit the circles. I stamped my greetings in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink, then accented with a small hydrangea stamp around the edge of the circles for a little pizzazz.

Here's the finished set in my photo booth. Then enjoy the individual photos with their matching envelope flaps. (You know the rule - NO naked envelopes!)

Now for fun, I tried this method again with the Snail Mail Suite. I love the totally different look!

What Tools Do You Need to Get Started with Papercrafting?

Most of us have a junk drawer that has a few tools in it. Maybe a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a small hammer for hanging pictures on the wall. Maybe you have more.

The tools I have in my stamping room aren't too different really. I have a variety of brushes, scissors, rulers, cutting tools, glues, an assortment of adhesives, water spray bottle, heat gun, rags for clean up, punches, dies, seal healing mats, piercing tools, paper cutter, power strip, and lots more.

Q: What should I do if I just want to give papercrafting a try before I invest lots of money?

A: The simplest of answers is if you want to just try papercrafting out, I would recommend Stampin' Up!s monthly subscription box called Paper Pumpkin. For $22 a month you get practically everything you need to start stamping cards right away. All you have to provide is scissors and glue. With your first kit you get a clear stamping block to attach the photopolymer stamps to. Photopolymer stamps are "see-through" stamps that make it easy to position. Q: If I am truly gonna be serious what should I buy first?
